Practicum Guidelines

For Instructors:

  • Each instructor should develop a plan to engage the students for the remainder of the semester. These may include:
    • Specific assignments
      • Classroom management plan
      • Unit development plan
      • Model lesson plans for 
        • Direct instruction
        • Inquiry lesson
        • Cooperative learning/Plan for group work/Reflections
      • Group activities
      • Individual activities
      • Other activities
  •  Use the resource page as needed.
    • Provide other resources to add to the page
  • For students on a growth plan (not in their final semester)
    • The growth plan can be completed in a future practicum
  • For students on a growth plan (in their final semester):
    • They should complete all other activities of the course
    • A plan should be developed to give the student the opportunity to complete the growth plan
      • This may include finding summer placements
    • Inform chair of each case
    • The student will receive an I or an IP for the course if the growth plan cannot be completed before the end of the semester

For Students:

  • Stay in close contact with your Practicum Instructor of Record.
  • Collaborate with Mentor Teacher and support efforts for their students per the directions provided by the school and district leadership;
  • Seek online teaching and learning resources and appropriate and feasible home learning activities to share with mentor teacher;
  • Further develop lesson planning skills based on appropriate grade-level standards as well as develop online learning content, if requested;
  • Engage in reflective practice regarding the instruction they have delivered to date as well as how recent events may impact students’ social-emotional health and academic learning;
  • Complete required practicum assignments and requested tasks to strengthen knowledge and skills based on feedback from completed observations, etc.; 
  • Remain in contact with Practicum Instructor of Record.
  • Per our standard practices, for practicum students who have not met expectations based on the student’s experience(s) completed to date, any additional time needed to demonstrate competencies will be determined by the university Practicum Instructor of Record who will evaluate cases individually to determine the best course of action for practicum students who have not met expectations. Incomplete or failing grades will be issued if appropriate, and professional development plans and an additional summer or future practicum placement will be secured once schools re-open.
