International Communication, Minor

This minor adds a useful synergy to a variety of majors, since it includes not only coursework in cultural diversity, but also via approved international exchanges.

  • A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor's degree.

    To receive a minor (18 - 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

Purpose Statement

The minor in International Communication provides a conceptual foundation for and knowledge of the cultural differences involved in communication in international contexts paired with a semester-long study abroad experience in communication. Combined with a major in a communication discipline, the minor can open up additional opportunities for careers in international organizations and/or other countries.


Student Learning Outcomes

  • Describe significant cultural and national differences in communication.
  • Explain how cultural differences create both barriers and opportunities for communication in international contexts.
  • Demonstrate an ability to successfully navigate the cultural and institutional differences in higher education systems outside of the United States.
  • Articulate differences and similarities between one or more communication professions in the United States and in at least one other country.

Additional Admission Requirements
  • Individual program admission requirements over and above admission to NAU are required.

  • To participate in the international component of this minor, you must:

    • Have earned at least sophomore status with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5. 
    • Have completed two of the following courses with a Grade of "C" or better:
      • COM 101, COM 200
      • CMF 121, CMF 122
      • JLS 105, JLS 131
      • PHO 100, PHO 101
      • VC 101, VC 102
    • Meet the standards established by NAU's Center for International Education for participating in an international exchange plan
    • Apply and be approved for admission to an international exchange plan sanctioned by NAU's School of Communication
    Exchange opportunities for this minor include programs in communication campaigns, international public relations, media program management, media marketing, imagineering, and interactive multimedia concept development. Other programs may be accepted. See a School of Communication international minor advisor for information about specific study abroad programs that you may use to complete this minor.

     

Minor Requirements
  • Take the following 18 - 24 units with a Grade of 'C' or better in each course:
    At least 9 units must be upper-division coursework.

    • Multiple units from COM 223 and COM 323 (These units transfer from the international host school) (12 - 18 units)
    • CST 323 (3 units)
    • Select one course from the following (3 units):
      • ANT 102, ANT 103
      • CST 321
      • ES 300
      • HIS 102
      • POS 361
      • REL 150
      • WGS 360
  • You must consult with your academic advisor and the Office of International Studies before embarking on a Study Abroad plan. In addition, you must have approval to transfer study abroad credits into COM 223 and COM 323 before engaging in a Study Abroad plan.
