NAU researchers study effects of COVID-19, health disparities on caregivers of people with ADRD

More than 6 million people in the US live with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD), and more than 16 million family members provide the bulk of their care. In rural areas, where caregivers already have difficulty accessing health and support services because of health disparities, COVID-19-related isolation is exacerbating the intense responsibilities of these unpaid caregivers and potentially contributing to their stress, anxiety, depression and physical health.

ADRD researchers seek family caregivers for survey

Researchers from the Southwest Health Equity Research Collaborative (SHERC) are conducting a study that will identify the needs and assets of diverse caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s and related dementias (ADRD) in northern Arizona.

SHERC receives grant for Alzheimer’s family caregivers study

Family caregivers provide the bulk of care to individuals with Alzheimer’s and similar conditions. These intense responsibilities cause many caregivers to experience high rates of chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and physical health conditions. The symptoms intensify for caregivers of diverse and rural backgrounds who have fewer means to access health and support resources, according to past research.
