Elizabeth Martinez, a Psychology major and Honors student, coauthored the article Interns-to-Scholars: First-Generation Success Beyond the Classroom with her faculty mentor within the Interns-to-Scholars program, Associate Professor T. Mark Montoya. Dr. Montoya is the Director of the Ethnic Studies Program at Northern Arizona University.
The Interns-to-Scholars program exposes undergraduate students to activities involved in conducting research, scholarly, or creative work with a focus on stimulating student interest in inquiry and the development of discipline-related skills.
This engaging article centers on a narrated dialog between two first-generation students, one an intern, the other now a scholar. This conversation brings to the surface the challenges and successes experienced by a first-generation intern and the scholar’s reflections, advice, and support.
The article will appear in the next issue of the Journal of First-generation Student Success.
