The winners of the prestigious Viola Awards were announced at a sold-out gala attended by more than 600 patrons on Saturday, March 3rd. The Viola Awards are described as “Flagstaff’s Oscars for the arts and sciences community” and celebrate excellence in a number of categories. Winning the Innovations category was Hope and Trauma in a Poisoned Land, a project directed by Ann Collier, which used art as the medium with which to explored the impact of uranium mining on Navajo lands and people. The exhibition featured artwork from twenty local and regional artists, including Dr. Collier.
