Would you like to join NAU Jazz?
Welcome to the audition process!
When?
Tuesday, August 29, 2023
3 – 7 PM
Where?
Performing and Fine Arts Building (37), Room 139 (Jazz Studies Office)
How?
Sign up for an audition time on the bulletin board outside of the Jazz Studies Office (Rm.139) August 21 – 28, 2023.
Additional time slots will be added if needed. In the event of an unavoidable schedule conflict with auditions, please contact Chris Finet to arrange an alternate time.
Download an audition packet, and fill out the student information form, found below.
Your audition packet will include an audition excerpt for your instrument as well as a lead sheet with chord changes for the popular standard There Will Never Be Another You. The recorded accompaniment is available for download below, and can be adjusted (panning left or right) to silence rhythm section tracks.
During your audition, you will:
1. Perform the etude in your instrument’s packet, as you would in a big band setting.
2. Interpret the melody from There Will Never Be Another You and (optionally) improvise 1-2 choruses.
LEAD TRUMPET: Perform the lead trumpet excerpt found in your packet instead of the regular excerpt
RHYTHM SECTION: Perform at least one additional chorus of accompaniment (i.e. walking bass line, comping for guitar/piano)
DRUMS: play the excerpt in your packet and demonstrate a variety of feels / tempos as requested in the audition.
Be sure to read all instructions.
Print and bring the completed Info Form (found below) with you to your audition. (After you push submit, screenshot your form for printing)
