How long have you been at the CSTL?
13 years in July!
What are you currently working on and why is it important?
I work on a lot of different projects here at the Center, but the most recent is our Power of Data Online courses for secondary educators. We have been helping teachers teach with geographic information systems (GIS) using a process called Geospatial Inquiry since 2009, and now we’re taking on online.
Geospatial Inquiry helps teachers enhance their teaching by engaging students in the exploration of data-driven maps. The goal of the method is for students to be able to communicate with maps and data. The visualizations they create serve as evidence for their claims about solutions to problems or explanations for phenomena. Not only do students engage in the practices of science, history, and geography, but they also learn computational thinking and data analysis skills in the process.
Is a hot dog a sandwich and why or why not?
If you could take 3 items to a remote island what would they be?
1. SCUBA gear with unlimited source of compressed air
2. A personal chef with mad fishing and scavenging skills
3. A kayak – I’m assuming I’m not stranded. It sounds like a vacation to me!
What is your superpower?
GIS. What’s yours?
Thanks Lori!
