On-campus employment

Working as a J-1 student at NAU

As a J-1 student, you must ALWAYS have authorization prior to engaging in all employment on- or off- campus. This authorization is in the form of letter signed by ISSS. If you have questions about on-campus employment, you should meet with your ISSS advisor to discuss options.

On-campus employment is limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week (part-time) during the fall and spring semesters, and full-time during summer and university breaks except when the summer is the first or final semester of enrollment.

It is important to keep in mind that employment activity that takes place on-campus does not necessarily mean that the job can be considered as “on-campus employment.” According to J-1 regulations, on-campus employment means that NAU will be your employer, therefore the paycheck should come from NAU.

To apply for on-campus employment authorization, please submit a request on iNAU no fewer than five business days before your intended start-date. You may not begin the employment until you have an authorization letter from the ISSS. If you require a social security number, you may indicate this need as part of the on-campus employment request form (it specifically asks if you need one or not).
