Department of STEM Education

Shaping the future of STEM education

The Department of STEM Education (DSE) houses undergraduate academic programs for pre-service science and mathematics teachers (in partnership with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics) and graduate programs for both pre-service and in-service science teachers. The department also co-sponsors the PhD program in Curriculum and Instruction for STEM professionals (in partnership with the Department of Teaching and Learning and the Department of Educational Specialties). Additionally, the DSE houses the Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL), which engages in STEM education research, evaluation, professional learning, community engagement, and outreach programs.

Robyn Yewell, an elementary school teacher in Tucson and a master’s student in the Center for Science Teaching, was announced in February as one of the national awardees of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, K-6, for 2020. Approximating Practice in Mathematics Teacher Education: Supporting and Revealing Teacher Candidate Learning The Department of STEM Education along with the Center for Science Teaching and Learning presented guest speaker, Dr. Matthew Campbell from West Virginia University. Dr. Campbell drew upon examples from practice and research to illustrate learning opportunities or teacher candidates.
