Department of Biological Sciences scholarships

For biological sciences undergraduate and graduate students, there are several Department of Biological Sciences scholarships available. Descriptions of the scholarships can be found below, and applications for scholarships are due in early February each year (login to BBLearn to apply).

Junior or senior in upcoming fall semester Accordion Closed

Arizona Flycasters Scholarship

  • Junior or senior status in the fall of the upcoming academic year
  • GPA 2.5 or higher, with preference for 3.0 or higher
  • Must demonstrate a passion for biology as it relates to fish management, fisheries, or aquatic biology and conservation
  • Demonstrate competence in the core curriculum of Natural Sciences
  • An additional essay is required. In a two-part essay (100-200 words), answer:
    • how will your choice of studies and your passion impact your future educational or employment activities relating to any of the following areas: fish biology and management, fish habitats, aquatic biology, water quality or conservation?
    • how will this scholarship help you achieve your academic goals at Northern Arizona University?

Dr. Russell P Balda Scholarship in Biology

  • Major: Biology
  • Junior or senior status in the fall of the upcoming academic year
  • Preference shall be given to a study focus area in Ecology or Zoology
  • Resident of the Colorado Plateau region (within western Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, southern and eastern Utah, and northern Arizona)
  • Past recipients may re-apply

Richard M Paicius Endowed Scholarship

  • Major: Biomedical Science (student of CENS)
  • Junior or senior status in the fall of the upcoming academic year
  • Must be in good academic standing

The Jack and Hanna Sisley, MD, Pre-Medicine Scholarship

  • Interested in pre-medical professions of medicine or pharmacy
  • Junior or senior status in the fall of the upcoming academic year
  • GPA 3.5 or higher
  • Demonstrates financial need
  • Additional essay required. Include a 500-word essay describing your aspiration to work in the world of medicine or pharmacy
  • Past recipients may re-apply

Kenneth Derifield Biology Scholarship

  • Earned 20 or more credits in biology
  • Senior year must be completed at NAU

Exercise Physiology Scholarship

  • Major: Exercise Science

  • Recommendation from Exercise Science faculty
  • Preference given to students who are:
    • active in exercise physiology research, or
    • interested in pursuing a career in exercise physiology

Justin P. Carder Memorial Scholarship (rotating)

  • Major: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences and Education, Forestry and Geology
  • GPA 2.5 or higher
  • Preference for an individual that demonstrates financial need
  • Additional essay is required. Provide an essay (1,200 character limit) describing career/personal goals and objectives and any special circumstances of which the scholarship selection committee should be aware.

Drickamer-Montgomery Scholarship in Biological Sciences

  • Major: Biology
  • Sophomore, junior, or senior status in the fall of the upcoming academic year
  • GPA 3.2 or higher
  • Child of a faculty or staff member within the Department of Biological Sciences
  • If no qualified candidate meets the above criteria, the following will be used to choose a candidate:
    • major: Biology (emphasis on vertebrates)
    • sophomore, junior, or senior status in the fall of the upcoming academic year
    • GPA 3.2 or higher

Kerry Henrickson Scholarship

  • Major: Biology
  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Holds a position with education responsibilities such as supplemental instruction or recitation leader (minimum one semester)
  • Recommendation from faculty mentor describing the candidate’s teaching skills

Richard F. Shand Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research in Microbiology

  • Major: Microbiology
  • Junior or senior status in the fall of the upcoming academic year
  • Must include a letter of support from research mentor
  • Additional essay required; a description of the research project (limit 2 pages) and why it is important that this research be conducted
  • Past recipients may re-apply

Vesto M Slipher Scholarship

  • Major: Biology, Microbiology, Exercise Science
  • Strong achievements at NAU

James R Wick Scholarship (for purchase of textbooks)

  • Major: Biology
  • Must have declared intent to enter biology major
  • Must not have any other scholarship for textbooks

Brian Layton Cardall Memorial Scholarship

  • PhD candidate with research focus on conservation biology

  • Interest and/or achievements in plant sciences
  • Demonstrate merit, academic accomplishments, and leadership potential

Stanley A. Rasmussen Memorial Scholarship

  • Major: Exercise Science
  • Junior, senior, or graduate student status in the fall of the upcoming academic year
  • GPA 3.25 or higher
  • Active service in the area of exercise science within the major, profession, or community

Jerry O. Wolff Student Enrichment Scholarship

  • Major: Biology
  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Undergraduate or graduate research in organismal biology with an emphasis in animal behavior, ecology, or evolution
