Definition of a transfer student:
NAU considers a transfer student to be a person who completed 12 credit hours or more at a college/university after the completion of high school.
A transfer student is typically coming directly from a 2-year or 4-year college/university or took time off from college before returning to a classroom setting. So let’s begin by sharing our purpose for creating content: the transfer student experience is appropriately different than the first-year experience of those who are coming directly to NAU from high school. A reason our program exists to share stories directly from NAU’s transfer student population.
During the first week of the Fall 2022 semester, the NAU Flagstaff-Mountain campus welcomed over 700 new transfer students.
We had 120 transfer students attended our New Transfer Student Picnic on Tuesday night where we played lawn games, ate food, and introduced ourselves to someone new.
Our blog today will focus on the questions our mentors are commonly asked during the first week of classes.

What events is the Transfer Jacks Mentoring Program hosting?
Most of our events for the Fall 2022 semester are already shared on True Blue Connections at https://nau.edu/tbc. We will add a couple more events soon that our mentors are planning. In the search bar, type in “transfer” and click on Transfer & Online Connections.
Events are open to any NAU Flagstaff-Mountain transfer student, meaning attendees can be new transfer students or transfer students who are returning for another semester and are closer to degree completion. Field trips that require RSVP need to be completed in True Blue Connects.
Remaining September events:
September 13: Meal of the Month
September 14: Outdoor Painting Event
September 24: Grand Canyon Field Trip
September 28: Loteria
How do I get in contact with a Transfer Jacks mentor?
The peer mentors have attempted to reach you through email, phone call, or text message. New NAU transfer students can see their Transfer Jacks mentor in Louie and set up an appointment on the Appointment Planner: appointments.nau.edu.
Returning transfer students, meaning those who have already taken classes at NAU, are not automatically paired with a Transfer Jacks mentor. But sometimes transfer students might not have met with us during their first semester. We are still available if you want to connect with a person from our team, so if you are interested in having a mentor meet with you again, or for the first time this semester, reach out to us at transferconnections@nau.edu.
What advice do you have for transfer students during the first month of classes?
Find one way to get connected to a resource or group on campus within the first four weeks of the semester!
When are you giving away more free stuff?
Save the Date! National Transfer Student Week is October 17-22, 2022, so we will plan to give out t-shirts to the transfer students who attend our events on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Transfer Jacks Flags: We will be giving away 30 exclusive Transfer Jacks flags during the months of September and October. The interview project that we will announce soon will be the first time we are giving away flags as a thank you for participating in our transfer student storytelling project.
