The future of mathematics

In recent years, undergraduate research has become a feature of the department’s BS degree program. Jeff Rushall has been most responsible for student interest in research, and his Friday Afternoon Mathematics Undergraduate Seminar (FAMUS) provides a forum for recruitment. Many departmental majors have undertaken research projects, and twelve of the department’s current faculty have been involved in project supervision.

Undergraduate research has been supported by NAU I2S and HURA awards and by funding from NASA Space Grants and the Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics. Funding to support student travel to national and regional meetings has also come from the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. The research has led to a number of publications by our undergraduates.

A number of faculty may have research projects available.  You can find out more by reading some of the UGRADS posters on the walls in the Adel Mathematics Building, by attending FAMUS or SUnMaRC, and by talking to the department chair or its Undergraduate Research Coordinator, Jeff Rushall.
