Contest Information

The individual contest consists of:

• multiple choice
• 40 questions
• 45 minutes
• no calculators allowed

The test will cover both 7th and 8th grade math.  All participants are encouraged to answer as many questions as possible in the time allowed. There will be separate awards for 7th graders and for 8th graders.

This exam will be taken individually by all participants and will consist of questions from different levels and topics of mathematics.

Individual certificates will be given to the top ten 7th graders and to the top ten 8th graders, respectively.

Teams

• Schools may enter up to two teams: a 7th grade team and an 8th grade team.
• Teams may have up to 10 people.
• A 7th grader may be on an 8th grade team, but an 8th grader may not be on a 7th grade team.

Scoring

• Incorrect answers are worth 0 points.
• Correct answers in the first 2 minutes (minutes 1 and 2) are worth 10 points each.
• Correct answers in the next two minutes (minutes 3 and 4) are worth 9 points each.
• Correct answers in the next two minutes (minutes 5 and 6) are worth 8 points each.
• Correct answers in the next two minutes (minutes 7 and 8) are worth 7 points each.
• Correct answers in the next two minutes (minutes 9 and 10) are worth 6 points each.

Format

1. Teams will line up in a single file line.
2. At the signal, Team Member #1 runs to pick up Question #1 and returns to the line where Team Members #1 and #2 work on the problem.
3. When finished, Team Member #2 runs to turn it in and pick up Question #2 while Team Member #1 goes to the end of the line.
4. Team Member #2 returns with Question #2 to be completed by Team Member #2 and Team Member #3.
5. When finished, Team Member #3 runs to turn it in and pick up Question #3 while Team Member #2 goes to the end of the line.
6. This continues until all twenty questions have been answered or until the ten minutes is up.

Strategy

• In what order should the students line up if students who are next to each other in line will be working on problems together?
• Is it worth taking a little bit more time at the beginning in order to get the 10 points (instead of rushing, making a mistake and getting a zero on a 10 point problem)?
• Note: the problems will not be in order of increasing difficulty. 

Teams

• A 7th grader may be on an 8th grade team, but an 8th grader may not be on a 7th grade team.

No calculators are allowed.

A tournament bracket will be used to pair teams, which will compete on a series of questions. The questions will be projected onto a screen and read simultaneously to the group. The first team to buzz in, be recognized, and give the correct answer in the allotted time limit will earn a point. If the first team to buzz in gives an incorrect answer, the other team will be given an opportunity to answer the same question.
