Become an NAU graduate teaching assistant

Join the mathematics and statistics department at Northern Arizona University

Each year, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Northern Arizona University awards up to 20 half-time graduate teaching assistant (GTA) positions to students in the MS and MAT programs. About half of these positions are awarded to new students and about half go to returning students.

Appointed GTAs will receive:
  • a competitive stipend ($15,000 for the 2019-2020 academic year)
  • a waiver of the non-resident portion of tuition and a waiver of 100 percent of resident tuition for each semester of the appointment
  • a waiver of the student health insurance premium

GTA Responsibilities:
  • teach two sections (per semester) of either MAT 108 (Algebra for Pre-Calculus), MAT 125 (Pre-Calculus), MAT 114 (Quantitative Reasoning) or a similar course
  • serve as a proctor in the Lumberjack Mathematics Center (LMC) Testing Room and as a tutor in the LMC Lab
  • participate in a GTA training program (4-6 hours per week)
  • complete a 9-credit hour course load (per semester) in chosen program

*MAT 108 and MAT 125 may be co-taught with another GTA.

*GTAs pursuing the MS in Statistics may teach STA 270 (Applied Statistics) in their second year. Occasionally, first year GTAs may assume this role.

Teaching Details Accordion Closed

  • prepare lectures
  • hold regular office hours or tutoring hours in the LMC
  • assign and grade assignments, including, but not limited to, homework, quizzes and tests
  • assign course grades

*GTAs assigned to teach STA 270 will also write their own exams.

*GTAs assigned to teach STA 270 do not work in the LMC lab.
