NAU’s DataFest is an outstanding opportunity to work actively with challenging real-life data. The weekend competition is focused on giving undergraduate students unique experiences with data handling and analysis, while engaging in important Career Development skills such as communication and teamwork. Here at NAU, we strive to put together strong interdisciplinary groups of 5 students prior to the competition. Undergraduates from any NAU discipline are invited to participate!

What is DataFest? Accordion Closed
The American Statistical Association (ASA) DataFest is a nationally-coordinated undergraduate competition in which undergraduates work together around the clock to find and share meaning in a large, rich and complex data set. Employers love to see this kind of experience on student resumes!
Previous years’ data sets have included crime data from the Los Angeles Police Department, dating data from eHarmony, energy use data from GridPoint and sales data from Ticketmaster. This year’s data set will be revealed at the opening of the event on Friday evening. At the conclusion of the competition, each team will have five minutes to make a presentation to our panel of judges. In addition to a Judges’ Choice award, we will give awards such as Best Visualization, Best Insight, and Best Use of External Data
Who can compete? Accordion Closed
Undergraduate students from any major at Arizona State Universty, Northern Arizona University or University of Arizona can participate in ASA DataFest. The competition is hosted locally on each university campus and virtually for online students this year.
ASA DataFest Arizona will require competition groups to be maximized to 4 or 5 competitors. The DataFest organizers will regroup teams such that team sizes are maximized, while ensuring you are grouped with teammates of your choice. Any teammates indicated on the final registration form will be maintained.
Need a team or have questions about the event? Accordion Closed
NAU will hold a one-time organizational meeting where students can meet potential group members and ask questions about the ASA DataFest weekend. Participants from previous events will also be present to give a student perspective on the benefits and reasons for participating.
The NAU DataFest organizational meeting will be held in-person from TBD in Adel Mathematics Room 206. Any students considering competing in the competition should attend this organizational meeting!
How do I register? Accordion Closed
Student participants must pre-register prior to TBD. The competition is expected to grow significantly in size and the number of participants will be limited. All students must pre-register separately! Students looking to compete with teammates will provide this information during final registration.
