International student health insurance
What you need to know to get insured
Whether your status as an international student is F-1 or J-1, make sure you know what is required for you, and what steps you may be able to take to request a waiver.
Health insurance requirements and exceptions
F-1 students Accordion Closed
All international students in F-1 status are required to have the NAU student health insurance, which is charged to all students’ LOUIE accounts each semester.
There are a few exceptions to the health insurance requirement. Students who meet one of the following criteria must complete a health insurance waiver e-form on iNAU before the deadline:
- F-1 students who are sponsored by the government of their home country, either by full sponsorship including health insurance coverage, or by health insurance coverage only.
- To request a waiver: F-1 students and their dependents who are academically enrolled or in a language learning program are required to submit the Health Insurance Waiver e-form on iNAU before the waiver deadline.
- F-1/F-2 students who have insurance provided through US employment or through a parent or spouse’s US employment.
- To request a waiver: International students may provide health insurance documentation showing the type of insurance, coverage amount, and dates of coverage to ISSS before the waiver deadline. Coverage must include repatriation and medical evacuation. Travel insurance is not accepted. All documentation must be in English.
Eligibility to request a waiver from the NAU insurance department is determined by the Center for International Education. The final decision to waive the NAU health insurance requirement will be made by the Center for International Education. Requests for waivers and refunds of NAU health insurance after the deadline will not be granted.
Note: Before requesting a waiver, please keep in mind that health care in the US is extremely expensive and most medical facilities do not bill out-of-country insurance providers. Payment of the medical bill is the patient’s responsibility. The patient will need to seek reimbursement from the home country insurance provider. Health insurance is required for your financial protection and for expenses of the health care providers. The university is not responsible for medical expenses or filing claims.
Questions regarding health insurance should be directed to the NAU Campus Health Services.
J-1 students Accordion Closed
All international students in J-1 status are required to have the NAU student health insurance for the duration of their DS-2019 validity and J-1 status. The insurance is charged to all students’ LOUIE accounts each semester.
There are a few exceptions to the health insurance requirement. Students who meet one of the following criteria must complete a health insurance waiver e-form on iNAU before the deadline:
- J-1 Exchange Students coming through the ISEP exchange organization are not required to purchase NAU student health insurance. All other exchange students must purchase NAU student health insurance.
- J-1/J-2 students who are sponsored by the US government or an international organization and are provided health insurance coverage.
To request a waiver: For both J-1 and J-2 students, arrangements for the waiver should be made by the sponsoring agency prior to arrival during the application process.
If your request is approved, the waiver will be granted. The final decision to waive the NAU health insurance requirement will be made by the Center for International Education. Requests for waivers and refunds of NAU health insurance for previous semesters will not be granted.
All waiver requests must be submitted to ISSS before the waiver deadline.
Questions regarding health insurance should be directed to the NAU Campus Health Services.
