Curricular Practical Training
Off-campus training opportunities
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows currently enrolled and eligible F-1 students to request authorization to engage in paid or unpaid off-campus training opportunities. CPT must always be directly related to the student’s major field of study (but not a minor or certificate program) and integral to the curriculum of study.
How to participate in CPT
Eligibility Accordion Closed
- Must currently be in valid F-1 status at NAU.
- Must have been enrolled on a full-time basis as an F-1 student for two consecutive semesters without a gap in F-1 status.
- Have an employment offer in writing.
- Demonstration of continued enrollment in a full-course of study for the duration of the CPT period.
- Training is directly related to the program of study and is an integral component of the curriculum.
- Must receive academic credit for the training experience.
- Transfer students or students who adjusted their status from another visa category to F-1 while in the US should make an appointment with an ISSS advisor to discuss eligibility.
General CPT requirements Accordion Closed
CPT is granted per position, per period of authorization, and only one semester at a time. If a student wishes to extend CPT authorization or have multiple CPT authorizations concurrently, the student must apply for each additional training opportunity or for an extension of their current approval separately and in advance of the changes. This rule applies even if the employer or training site does not differ. If the position in title or scope changes, the student must apply for CPT authorization before commencing the training or new position.
Under no circumstances may a student begin a paid off-campus position in advance of receiving CPT authorization. Authorization comes in the form of a new I-20 with specified authorization dates. Employment before or after the approved dates as printed on the I-20 constitutes a violation of status and will result in F-1 program termination.
F-1 students are limited to a total of 20 hours of any combination of on- or off-campus employment or training during regular and/or required semesters. A regular/program required semester is defined as fall, spring, and final term summer semesters. F-1 students may be granted CPT authorization at full-time (more than 20 hours per week) during official university breaks (winter, spring, and summer break). It is important to remember that full-time CPT that totals to 365 or more days results in ineligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

If for any reason your employment ends before the end date indicated on your I-20, contact your ISSS advisor.
