Information for faculty, staff & community members
Who are sponsored students?
Sponsored students are undergraduate or graduate students who receive financial support or education funding from a third-party source such as an agency or corporation, non-profit organization, or foreign government (Saudi Arabia Cultural Mission, Fulbright, etc.). NAU works with over 10 sponsoring agencies and works to support the various requirements and academic policies that students must meet in order to maintain their sponsorship.
How are sponsored students different?
Sponsoring agencies have specific requirements and guidelines that students must adhere to. As a result, sponsored students often have an additional layer of rules to follow in order to maintain their sponsorship.
Academic and employment restrictions Accordion Closed
In addition to immigration requirements, sponsored students often have further requirements in the areas of:
- Major/Minor/Certificate change or addition restrictions
- Limitations in online or blended/hybrid coursework
- Limitations in summer enrollment
- Limitations in transfer credit courses
- Minimum GPA requirements
- Reporting of program progress to sponsoring agency
- Maximum length of program sponsorship
- Employment or internship restrictions
Student Group Accordion Closed
Sponsored students have the student group INSP applied to their account. This indicates that a student may have requirements from their sponsoring organization that they are required to follow.
ISSS maintains relationships with sponsoring organizations, to support sponsored students. Please contact us at isss@nau.edu or (928) 523-1520 with any questions you may have when advising a sponsored student, but specifically, if the student is inquiring about transfer credits, online or blended coursework, or employment.
Billing Accordion Closed
Sponsored students have written agreements with their sponsoring agencies that specify scholarship terms specific to their academic program. These agreements are often referred to as Financial Guarantees or Financial Support Letters. In coordination with Third-Party Billing on campus, ISSS processes these agreements and ensures students’ tuition, fees, and other charges are invoiced accordingly.
If sponsored students have questions about their NAU student account they should check for a valid financial guarantee on file with their sponsoring agency and ISSS. Questions can be directed to isss@nau.edu.
