Changes for computers not located in PC Labs or Classrooms
Starting in early June, new configurations for computers NOT located in PC Labs or Classrooms will follow an ITS support model. In addition, we will also begin migrating older Forestry configurations to this ITS support model. Machines falling under this new configuration are placed into two categories:
- FS – Primary desktops used by full-time, state-supported School of Forestry employees and all laptops used only by employees.
- RL – Desktops and laptops not classified as above. These include those in use in or by research labs, postdocs, non-state supported staff, non-Forestry staff, and student workers.
The major changes related to this new configuration are:
- All desktops: Drive mapping other than forestry X:/Q:, employee H:, and student Z: will need to be set up by hand. Also, users logging into a particular desktop for the first time will need to add non-standard network printers by hand.
- FS desktops and laptops: Any NAU employee or affiliate can now log in. Only those individuals you deem appropriate will be configured as local administrators.
- RL desktops and laptops: Any NAU employee, affiliate, or student can now log in. Only those individuals you deem appropriate will be configured as local administrators.
- RL desktops: User configuration data, including bookmarks and some account and software settings, will no longer “roam”. These data will only be stored on the local computer and consequently will no longer be backed up. ONLY data located in the Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Favorites, and Downloads folders will continue to be redirected to a campus server and hence backed up. (Data located on network shares or drives will continue to be backed up.)
