International study options for Honors students

Earn Honors credit or complete your Honors capstone abroad


If you are interested in studying abroad, explore your options and connect with an Education Abroad Advisor to select the best program for you. As an Honors student, we want you to create an Honors-quality study abroad experience.


How to earn Honors credit abroad

NAU faculty-led programs Accordion Closed

If you are participating on an NAU faculty-led program, work with the faculty leader of the trip to include an HON component to the course to turn it into an Honors course.  Submit the HON SA proposal form, checking the “faculty-led” box. You must attach a syllabus and a brief proposal identifying the Honors component. Submit no later than four weeks prior to your departure.

Interdisciplinary Global Programs (must be enrolled in the IGP program) Accordion Closed

Students participating in Interdisciplinary Global Programs (IGP) have the option to earn either 3.00, 4.00, or 7.00 units while abroad. Choose ONE of the following options:

  • For 3.00 units, act as discussion leader for other IGP students for fall (LAN 340H); or
  • For 4.00 units, complete Honors Fieldwork Option during Spring (8 units of 408 and 4 units of 408H to satisfy 4 units of Honors Capstone requirements); or
  • For 7.00 units, do BOTH of the above (discussion leader and Honors Fieldwork Option).

Submit the HON SA proposal form, checking the “IGP” box. You will also need to specify 3.00 or 6.00 units of HON credit. Note: If you are using your IGP internship for Honors Capstone units, please see the section below on Capstones.

Submit no later than April 1, prior to your departure.

Exchanges/USAC and other provider programs Accordion Closed

In order to earn Honors credit through these programs, you can choose from two options:

  • Three-essay option: Write a series of three essays documenting your study abroad experiences. Unique prompts are forwarded to you upon approval.
  • Take a designated Honors course at the host institution abroad or domestically. *Note: Very few foreign institutions offer this option.

Submit the HON SA proposal form, checking the “Three Essay Option” box. Submit course descriptions for your intended courses abroad.

Submit no less than two weeks prior to your departure.

How to fulfill the Honors Capstone requirement abroad

NAU faculty-led programs Accordion Closed

If you are participating on an NAU faculty-led program, work with the faculty leader of the trip to include an HON component to the course to turn it into an Honors course.  You may only use 4.00 units of faculty led credits in fulfillment of the Honors Capstone. Submit the HON SA proposal form, checking the “Honors Capstone” box. You MUST attach a syllabus and a brief proposal identifying the Honors component.

Submit no later than four weeks prior to your departure.

Interdisciplinary Global Programs (must be enrolled in the IGP program) Accordion Closed

Students participating in Interdisciplinary Global Programs (IGP) may only use 4.00 units of internship credits ex: (SPA408H, GER408H) in fulfillment of the Honors Capstone. Honors credits may be earned through an additional assignment. Unique prompts will be sent upon approval. Note: The LAN Honors credits offered in the fall are not applicable to the Honors Capstone, but can be used for Honors units.  Submit the HON SA proposal form, checking the “IGP” and the “Honors Capstone” box.

Submit no later than April 1, prior to your departure.

GRIP (Global Research or Internship programs) Accordion Closed

GRIP students may only use 4.00units of internship credit in fulfillment of the Honors Capstone. Honors credits may be earned through an additional assignment. Unique prompts will be sent upon approval. *Note: Internship credits earned abroad must follow CIE GRIP credit guidelines. Submit the HON SA proposal form, checking the ‘GRIP’ and the “Honors Capstone” box.

Submit no less than two weeks prior to your departure.

HON 491C – Honors Capstone Abroad Accordion Closed

Three Honors Capstone credits may be earned through this option. The HON 491C is an online course taken during the semester abroad. You will sign up for this course in addition to the other credits earned abroad. Your study abroad program must be at least four weeks long. Submit the HON SA proposal form, checking the “Honors Capstone” box.

Submit no less than four weeks prior to your departure.

In this Honors Capstone course, we will explore the value of place in order to gain greater cultural understanding while studying abroad.  This course is geared toward all majors, and will be taken on-line during the semester students are abroad. Students will perform individual research projects, interpret their experiences and observations through a variety of perspectives, and complete a professional travel journal to be shared with the CIE, NAU, and Honors communities.
