Regional Needs and Assets Assessment Report Published
The NARBHA Institute and Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation approached CHER in 2016 to conduct a comprehensive regional needs and assets assessment of health in northern Arizona. CHER has compiled and analyzed existing data and met with community members, leaders, and healthcare providers to understand what their priorities are and what resources they feel are most impactful in improving health across the region. Southwest Health Equity Research Collaborative established

Pediatric surgery center opens at Queen Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi
CHER Assistant Research Professor, Dr. Kristan Elwell has been involved in establishing a new and much-needed pediatric surgery wing at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi. It is the first center of its kind in the country. The Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care will help the hospital double the number of surgeries performed on children each year and provides a four-bed intensive care unit. Athlete’s Beliefs about Women Tied to Higher Rates of Sexual Assault
Northern Arizona University contributed to a recent study that suggests sexual violence is widespread among college-age athletic men, and was linked to athletes’ attitudes towards women. CHER Director, Dr. Julie Baldwin, is a coauthor on the study and said “It’s a major public health issue. We need to address this. It’s disconcerting in some ways that these beliefs are still prevalent.”
