NAU Mathematics and Statistics Scholarships
We award a number of scholarships to outstanding students enrolled in or entering one of our undergraduate or graduate programs.
The awards are announced each year in April during the Mathematics and Statistics Honors Week reception.
Undergraduate scholarships

The following is a list of available undergraduate scholarships and approximate award values.
The Joanna Wheaton Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Data Science Accordion Closed
Joanna Wheaton was the first Data Science major graduate from NAU, a Flagstaff community builder, and a selfless activist. Through her studies of Political Science, Urban and Regional Planning, Environmental Studies, Data Science, Math, and Economics, Joanna devoted herself to bringing her vision of a better world to light. Her passing in 2021 was a loss to the Flagstaff community and all who knew her, but she left a legacy of service, and the desire to create a more loving, just society.
Eligibility and selection criteria:
- Students enrolled in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, majoring in Data Science
- GPA of 2.5 or greater (where 4.0 = A)
- Students who will be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in the 2023-2024 academic year are eligible to apply
- Written statement detailing commitment and/or interest in Social and/or Environmental Justice
Preference shall be given to:
- Applicants who have demonstrated activity in and commitment to Social and/or Environmental Justice
- Applicants who have an interest in pursuing Social and/or Environmental Justice
The Vesto M. Slipher Scholarship (Mathematics Award) Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Outstanding junior or senior majoring in mathematics or statistics.
- Must have at least two semesters of remaining course work to be completed
Approximate Value: $1500
Charles E. Little Mathematics Education Scholarship Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Outstanding junior majoring (full-time enrollment) in mathematics, statistics or Mathematics Education
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- US citizen
- Career aspirations to be a high school mathematics teacher
- Preference to Arizona high school graduates

Joseph Mutter Mathematics Scholarship Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Outstanding sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in mathematics or statistics or mathematics education
- Preference will be given to graduates of high schools in Coconino County

Karan and Terence Hall Scholarship Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Deserving junior or senior majoring in mathematics or statistics
- Preference will be given to candidates maintaining or exceeding a cumulative GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate scholastic merit and/or financial need

J. Harvey Butchart Mathematics Scholarship Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Outstanding junior or senior majoring in mathematics, statistics or mathematics education
Approximate Value: $1100
John W. Jennison and William L. Parks Mathematics Scholarship Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Outstanding undergraduate student majoring in Mathematics
- Maintain a GPA of 3.2 or higher
- Demonstrate financial need
- U.S. citizen

Evelyn O. Bychinsky Award for Students of Promise in Mathematics Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Outstanding Sophomore or Junior majoring in Mathematics who show interest in mathematics through course work, field of study or extracurricular activities.
Approximate Value: 2 awards of $1000 each

Carlson Diekelman Rushall Schroeder Memorial Endowed Scholarship Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Graduate teaching assistant in mathematics, exhibiting excellence in the classroom as both a student and teacher.
Approximate value: $1200
Johnson-Ratliff Memorial Scholarship Accordion Closed
Eligibility:
- Graduate student in mathematics
- Second year graduate teaching assistant
- Preference for student with financial need
Approximate value: $1600
Application process
If you are a graduate student, there is no formal scholarship application process. All graduate students and teaching assistants are considered for these awards.
