3. Steps to Scholarships and Financial Aid
Even if you do not believe you will qualify for Federal Financial Aid, many university and private scholarships require you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

If you have not applied to the university and you are an undergraduate student, contact Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation; if you are a graduate student, contact the Graduate College.
    1. Obtain a PIN (Personal Identification Number) at pin.ed.gov
    2. After January 1, complete a FAFSA at fafsa.gov and list NAU [code 001082] as a recipient of the information. NAU’s priority deadline for institutional grant funding, Federal work-study, the Federal Perkins loan, and the Federal Supplement Educational opportunity Grant is February 1.
    3. Complete both the Scholarship Application and the STARS scholarship application at nau.edu/finaid. These applications are available during the winter break and have deadlines between January-March 1.
    4. Monitor your LOUIE To-Do list for any additional required documentation.
    5. If you will be using money from a loan to pay tuition and/or fees, complete Loan Finance Counseling at StudentLoans.gov. Your aid will not be distributed without this.
    6. If you will be using money from a loan to pay tuition and/or fees, you must use your PIN to sign your Electronic Master Promissory Note (EMPN) at StudentLoans.gov. Your aid will not be distributed without this.
    7. Complete your Certification Statement located in your LOUIE To-Do list. Your aid will not be distributed without this.
    8. Sign up for direct deposit of any potential financial aid refunds by logging into your LOUIE Student Center, click on Finances, and then click on Direct Deposit.
    9. Monitor LOUIE to review any type of aid you have been awarded, and to see if your award(s) will fully or partially pay your tuition and fees.
    10. If necessary, pay balances not covered by your financial aid by the due dates listed on your bill. Go to Student and Department Account Services at nau.edu/sdas for tuition due dates and payment methods.
    11. Keep your 'Refund' and 'Preferred' addresses updated in LOUIE. Be sure to check your NAU e-mail account regularly as time-sensitive information about your Financial Aid will only be sent here.
