The secondary analysis of existing data has become an increasingly popular method of enhancing the overall efficiency of the health research enterprise.

The RCC team has compiled a list of publicly available health-related electronic databases that NAU faculty can query in order to conduct their own secondary data analysis.

American Community Survey	The premier source for national population and housing information
National Health Interview Survey	Has monitored nation health since 1957 by collecting personal household interviews
Current Population Survey	The primary source of US populations labor force statistics by the US Census Bureau and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey	Since 1984, national system that collects state data about US residents on health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services through 400,000 health-related telephone surveys yearly
Medical Expenditure Panel Survey	Large-scale surveys of families and individuals, their medical providers, and employers across the US on the cost and use of health care and health insurance coverage
Survey of Income and Program Participation	Collects data and measures change on economic well-being, family dynamics, education, assets, health insurance, childcare, and food security
National Longitudinal Survey of Youth	Surveys that gather information at multiple points in time on the labor market activities and other significant life events of several groups of men and women
Panel Study of Income Dynamics	Longest running longitudinal household survey. In 1968, they started a national survey of 18,000 individuals living in 5,000 families in the US. They have data on them and their descendants covering employment, income, wealth, expenditures, health, marriage, childbearing, child development, philanthropy, education, and numerous other topics
Health and Retirement Study	Longitudinal panel study that surveys a representative sample of approximately 20,000 people in America. Supported by the National Institute on Aging and the Social Security Administration
National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health	Longitudinal national study of U.S. adolescents in grades 7 –12 during the 1994-1995 school year, and 2008. Data examines social, economic, psychological, and physical well-being, with data on the family, neighborhood, community, school, friendships, peer groups, and romantic relationships
American Housing Survey	Sponsored by the HUD and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, it is the most comprehensive national housing survey in the US since 1973, with information on the size, composition, and quality of the nation’s housing and measuring changes in our housing stock as it ages
US Government Health Open Portal	Data, tools, and resources to conduct research, develop web and mobile applications, design data visualizations, and more
US Government Health Data Portal	Offers high value health data more accessible to entrepreneurs, researchers, and policy makers in the hopes of better health outcomes for all
Inter-University consortium for Political and Social Research	An integral part of the infrastructure of social science research, ICPSR maintains and provides access to an archive of social science data for research and instruction
The Dataverse Project	Open source web application to share, preserve, cite, explore, and analyze research data to make data available to others, and replicate others' work more easily
Demographic Health Surveys	Demographic Health Surveys (DHS) collects, analyzes, and disseminates accurate and representative data on population, health, HIV, and nutrition through more than 300 surveys in over 90 countries
Human Relations Area File	HRAF produces scholarly resources and infrastructure on cultural diversity and commonality for research, teaching and learning, and HRAF supports and conducts original research on cross-cultural variation.
NIH data sharing Repositories	BMIC has maintained a list of NIH-supported data repositories at this site for the last several years. In an effort to provide this information more effectively and comprehensively, the list has been reorganized and a list of generalist repositories has been added
WHO Multi-Country Studies Archive	The focus of the WHO Multi-Country Studies Archive is on adult health and well-being in lower and middle income countries, engaging in methodological development, primary data collection, secondary data analysis and data dissemination
Dryad	Curated resource for scientific publications that are discoverable, freely usable, and citable that also provides the infrastructure for and promotes the re-use of scholarly research, scientific and educational data, and charitable missions
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey	The survey assesses the health and nutritional status of US adults and children combining interviews and physical examinations
National social Life, Health and Aging Project	A longitudinal, population-based study of health and social factors, designed to understand the well-being of older, community-dwelling Americans by examining the interactions among physical health and illness, medication use, cognitive function, emotional health, sensory function, health behaviors, social connectedness, sexuality, and relationship quality
National Survey on Drug Use and Health	The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides up-to-date information on tobacco, alcohol, and drug use, mental health and other health-related issues in the United States
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive	This tool allows access, exploration and analysis of the nation's substance abuse and mental health data, in order to support a better understanding of these critical areas of public health
CDC Wonder Data	Data including AIDS, births, cancer, mortality, environmental data available by ethnicity and mortality
The Health Resources and Services Administration	Primary federal agency for improving access to health care services for people who are uninsured, isolated, or medically vulnerable. Data are primarily on rural health care resources and outcomes
Kids County	Free statistical data about economics, education and health sorted by race, sex and age in their national data center. Includes information on child wellbeing, indicators related to health, and many social determinants of health (birth outcomes, dental health, vital statistics, insurance, mental health, housing, public assistance, school attendance, standardized test scores, food security)
United States Census	Accessible data from the US Census Bureau that includes areas of education, economics, employment, migration, housing, health, poverty, and more
Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools	RePORT provides access to reports, data, and analyses of NIH research activities, including information on NIH expenditures and the results of NIH supported research
Arizona Department Health Services Public Health Statistics	The Bureau of Public Health Statistics collects a variety of health and vital data, and maintains these in several primary databases for public health purposes, and for general public information
US Environmental Protections Agency Environmental Dataset Gateway	The Environmental Dataset Gateway is the official open data catalog of the EPA. Datasets can be accessed by region or topics including environmental justice, climate change, and EPA facilities
United States Geologic Survey Science Data Catalog	The USGS Science Data Catalog provides seamless access to USGS research and monitoring data from across the nation. Topic areas include water resources, national map data, and earthquake and volcano hazards program data
All of Us Research Program	The All of Us Research Program is building a dataset to help transform the future of health research by equipping researchers with expansive health data including electronic medical records, biomarkers, and genomic data from diverse populations, especially those underrepresented in biomedical research.
Complex Network Datasets	This website provides a searchable repository of complex network datasets on topics related to economic, social biological, technological, informational, and transportation issues
