Chair’s welcome

Welcome to the Mechanical Engineering Department at NAU

photo of Constantin Ciocanel, Director in NAU's Mechanical Engineering DepartmentOur department is the vibrant home to about 850 undergraduate and graduate students, several active student clubs and organizations, and internationally-renowned faculty who are committed to student success while leading cutting-edge research in the fields of biomechanics, smart and multifunctional materials, adaptive systems, computational fluid dynamics, computational solid mechanics, renewable energy, robotics, composite materials, thermal sciences, and systems dynamics.

We are committed to interdisciplinary work, collaboration, and hands-on learning—across research areas and academic disciplines as well as with our industry partners. Our capstone experience pairs full-time engineering teams from Honeywell, Northrop Grumman, WL Gore, APS, etc. with students and faculty, which work together toward finding solutions to a wide range of engineering projects.

In our department, you have the opportunity to undertake a rigorous curriculum, but also to be involved in extra-curricular activities, such as Baja, Aero Design, Human Powered Vehicle, and Wind Power Competition. NAU fosters connections with universities abroad, giving students the opportunity to undertake Exchanges and Study Abroad terms at these universities. Students may work alongside our faculty on research projects, throughout the academic year, adding to the opportunities facilitating academic and professional growth beyond the core curriculum.

I invite you to explore our web pages, to ask questions, and to consider the Mechanical Engineering department at NAU as a place to undertake your studies, whether at the undergraduate or graduate level.
