About Me:
After graduating from NAU with a B.S. Ed. in History and Social Studies Education, I spent ten years teaching at the secondary level in public schools. Upon completion of my M. Ed. in Secondary Education, I was lucky enough to return to NAU, and now serve as an Associate Teaching Professor in History and Social Studies Education. I currently teach HIS 206: Historical Inquiry and Teaching Seminar, HIS 407: Practicum in the Schools, and HIS 430: Methods for Teaching Government and Economics. Our nationally-accredited program is based on early and sustained teaching experiences, and our collaborations with local schools provide many opportunities for practicum work in the classroom. I have the wonderful opportunity of working with practicing teachers to form positive teaching experiences for our teacher candidates, from entry in the program through the conclusion of the student teaching experience.
What is Professor Carlson’s favorite class to teach? Accordion Closed
It is hard for me to pick a favorite course, as I really enjoy working with our teacher candidates at all stages of our program! In the HIS 206 course, our teacher candidates bring a unique excitement to the classroom as they begin their work with students in the school. As they move along into the HIS 407 practicum course, our teacher candidates become more refined in their classroom abilities and I love having the opportunity to observe their first lessons in the classroom! In the HIS 430 course, students explore methods for teaching Government and Economics, my personal favorites to teach at the secondary level.

Much of my research focuses on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and I really enjoy developing social studies curriculum and lessons plan ideas for teachers in the classroom. I have presented at a wide variety of conferences including the National Council for Social Studies, National Council for History Education, Arizona Council for History Education, Arizona Council for Social Studies, and the Western History Association. Recent presentations include such topics as the impact of current Supreme Court decisions, the use of tax dollars in stadium construction, inquiry-based learning in social studies, the economics of fake news, among others.

What does Professor Carlson like to do outside of school? Accordion Closed
When not in the classroom, you can usually find me watching a sporting event of some kind. Whether it is my kids’ games and matches, the Cardinals, or the Suns, I love all things sports! I also enjoy cooking and baking, especially cookies and pies. I recently began taking piano lessons, something I started as a kid and have always wanted to pick up again.
