MA in AL/TESL: Language teaching track
The Language Teaching track in NAU’s MA in AL/TESL program offers a blend of (a) practical and theoretical courses and (b) courses focused on language-teaching pedagogy and linguistics. In addition, students have the opportunity for supervised teaching experiences each semester.
Courses
One goal of this track is to prepare students for a range of ESL and EFL teaching opportunities.
Central courses include:
- ESL Methods (reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar)
- ESL Methods (speaking, listening, and pronunciation)
- ESL Curriculum
- Assessment for Second Language Skills
All MA in AL/TESL students take Foundations of Language Teaching and Learning, Grammatical Foundations, Introduction to Linguistics, and Sociolinguistics.
MA in AL/TESL students in the Language Teaching track take three electives, one of which must be a graduate TESL/applied linguistics course (e.g., Computer Applications in Applied Linguistics).
The MA in AL/TESL Language Teaching track differs from the Applied Linguistics track by emphasizing ESL methodology and curriculum issues.
Outcomes
