Gary Kane Study Abroad Scholarship
The Department of English announces the Gary Kane Scholarship for Study Abroad. NAU alum and former English major, Gary Kane, offers scholarship support for English majors to study abroad.
Scholarships will support students enrolled in a semester, or full-year study abroad program of their choice. $5,000 is available for disbursement for Fall 2023. Preference may be given to study abroad trips where English is not the native language, but students traveling to English-speaking countries are still encouraged to apply.

These funds shall be used as scholarships by undergraduate students to study abroad with the following criteria:
- BA or BSED English major at the sophomore, junior, or senior level;
- Submission of a 500-word essay outlining why you wish to study abroad in the country of choice, and why you are deserving of the award;
- Enrolled in a Study Abroad Program approved by NAU’s Center for International Education;
- Interdisciplinary Global Program students are ineligible.
How to apply
Interested applicants should submit:
- The Kane Study Abroad application
- A 500-word essay outlining why you wish to study abroad in the country of your choice, including why you are deserving of this award;

- An unofficial copy of your undergraduate transcript(s).
Further details
The funds may be applied to the students’ cost of attendance not already covered by other aid, excluding loans. Eligible expenses may include but are not limited to tuition, fees, room, board, transportation, supplies, books, internship expenses, and any educational and personal expenses associated with a study abroad program.
The scholarship shall be open to all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, or creed, national origin or ancestry, sex, age, physical or mental disability, veteran status, genetic information, citizenship or other legally or policy protected status.
Scholarship recipients shall be selected by the English Department Scholarship Committee. Annual scholarships will be disbursed via the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. It is the donor’s intent to ensure the recipients can cover all costs of participating in the study abroad program and have additional funds for personal expenses beyond the classroom opportunities.
*Please note that any scholarship awarded may have an impact on your current financial aid package (such as reducing your aid or swapping out your federal aid with your scholarship). This does not affect many students, but please contact Financial Aid at studyabroadaid@nau.edu should you have any follow-up questions or concerns about this.
