Know the specifics about CCJ internships at Northern Arizona University
Internships are a great way to gain valuable real-life experience in the field you wish to work in after graduation. The information below will help students pursuing degrees in criminology or criminal justice understand more about internships.
Requirements
- a minimum GPA:
- cumulative GPA 3.0 overall, or
- 3.0 in criminal justice course work, or
- permission of internship director
- the completion of a minimum number of credit hours:
- junior standing (completion of 60 hours or more) with at least 15 credit hours of criminal justice courses
How credit hours count towards electives
A maximum of six credit hours may be applied to as criminal justice elective requirements and up to six additional credit hours my be applied to general electives.
Internship credit hour value
Approximately 50 hours of internship work is required for each credit hour of college credit. Summer internships can be 10 weeks and valued the same as fall or spring semester with prior approval of the internship director.
Internships are subject to minimum and maximum credit-hour requirements depending on when the internship placement occurs:

Restrictions
There are restrictions on receiving class credit for internships:
- if you did work in the semester or semesters prior to submission and approval of internship application, you will not receive credit
- you may not intern at an organization you’re currently working at without prior approval from the internship director and agency
Insurance
When you are working at your internship site, you are not insured by the university for injury or harm you may cause to others. Some agencies, however, do insure their interns; ask the agency if this insurance is available.
