The department of Comparative Cultural awards our first Clara M. Lovett Humanities in Action grants this month. The Clara M. Lovett Humanities in Action Fund supports Public Humanities programming that is community focused and advances the professional development of students. Thanks to a generous grant from past NAU president Dr. Clara Lovett (1993-2001), we will award two annual grants to teams comprised of NAU faculty and students who are engaged in community-based Public Humanities projects. Two grants for up to $1500 each will be awarded each year.

Promoting Moral Reflection, Character Development, and Ethical Practice in Contemporary Healthcare in Northern Arizona
Dr. James Joiner, Department of Philosophy
The project brings together three undergraduate students with Northern Arizona Healthcare’s ethics board to research and design an ethical practice standard at NAH. Dr Joiner, who has consulted with the NAH ethics board for over a decade, writes “This is an exciting and rare opportunity for students to become involved with changing the healthcare system and patient care dynamics from within.”
The Refinish Project
Professor Sheri Mleynek Gilmore, School of Art and Design
