When NAU set the goal of becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution, alumna Nancy Navarro acted fast to bridge the gap.
In Arizona, roughly 30 percent of residents identify as Hispanic or Latinx, and 20 percent report speaking Spanish. But when it comes to universities, it is not uncommon for recruitment sessions and resources to be conducted exclusively in English. Up until 2017, this was the case for Northern Arizona University. Then, Nancy Navarro (BS Management, ’08; MEd Human Relations, ’11), Assistant Director for Diversity Recruitment in University Admissions, recognized this deficiency and set out to compensate. With the help of a like-minded team, she championed Spanish-speaking initiatives to support Hispanic and Latinx students and families. Ultimately, the resources and opportunities generated by Navarro propelled NAU towards an official designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

Pero cuando se trata de universidades, no es raro que las sesiones de reclutamiento y los recursos se realicen exclusivamente en inglés. Hasta 2017, este era el caso de la Universidad del Norte de Arizona (NAU por sus siglas en inglés).
