Steps in how your FNA is processed

Types of Aid Funding for Indigenous Lumberjacks

Whether you are a current student or would like to become a proud Lumberjack, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) is here to help you navigate your financial aid.

As an Indigenous Lumberjack, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships from your tribe, tribal organization, or other scholarship organizations. In addition, you may also be eligible to receive other kinds of financial aid like grants, Federal Work-Study, or student loans.

Land Acknowledgement

Northern Arizona University sits at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, on homelands sacred to Native Americans throughout the region. We honor their past, present, and future generations, who have lived here for millennia and will forever call this place home.

Financial Needs Analysis (FNA) Process

The FNA, or Financial Needs Analysis form, is a key part of your tribal scholarship application and must be completed each semester or year, depending on your tribe/tribal organization. The form contains information on your Arizona cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room/board, etc.) and the resources (financial aid, Estimated Family Contribution from the FAFSA) you are receiving for the corresponding academic year or semester.

Your tribe or nation will use the FNA to determine your eligibility for their scholarship and/or grant funding. An FNA is usually included in your tribe’s scholarship application. Generally, you must first complete your personal information and sign the FNA form, allowing our office to submit your information. Submit your completed FNA to OSFA at scholarships@nau.edu.

Financial Awards Process

Completing your FNA & Important Information

Submit Your FAFSA Accordion Closed

Most tribes/tribal organizations require a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be submitted. Completing the FAFSA unlocks access to federal financial aid, such as the Pell Grant, student and parent loans, Federal Work-Study, and even some scholarship programs. You will need to file a FAFSA every year you are planning to be a student.

  • Northern Arizona University school code: 001082
  • Priority Filing Date: April 1 for all NAU students
    • Applying by the priority date will ensure you are considered for the most possible federal and institutional grant aid.

TIP: You can check your Student Aid Report (SAR). If you see a blank or there is a “C” after your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) then you need to make corrections to your FAFSA
[e.g. EFC:                 OR EFC: 000000 C]

Complete Federal Verification Accordion Closed

Students may be selected for a process called verification after submitting the FAFSA by the Department of Education.  If you are selected, we at OSFA are required to verify the information you self-reported on your FAFSA. You will be notified through a To Do List item(s) and via email. This will need to be completed before we can process your FNA.

TIP: If you see an asterisk after your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) then you have been selected for FAFSA verification. You can check your Student Aid Report (SAR) for an * (asterisk) next to your EFC amount [e.g. EFC: 000000 *].

Need some help completing federal FAFSA verification?

  • For information on how to complete the verification, visit our Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid Verification Policy or contact our office at 928-523-4951 for assistance.

  • New Transfer Students: To get enrolled submit Priority Enrollment and make an appointment with your advisor

Maintain SAP Standards Accordion Closed

  • New First-Year Admits: You will not need to worry about meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Standards until after your first semester.
  • New Transfer/Re-admits/Continuing students: You must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Standards for the term that you are trying to receive aid. If you are not meeting SAP Standards then you must have an approved SAP Appeal on file for the term that you want to receive aid.

Consent to Release Information Accordion Closed

You must complete the FAFSA Consent to Release Information, found on your To Do List in your LOUIE Student Center. This gives our office authorization to give your financial aid-related information to an outside entity such as your tribe/tribal organization.

  • You only have to do this one time while you are a student at NAU.

In-state Tuition for Citizens of Arizona Tribes Accordion Closed

The following list of Arizona tribes is federally recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the State of Arizona as eligible for in-state tuition. Proof of tribal enrollment+ (i.e Certificate of Indian Blood or Tribal ID card) must be submitted to prove tribal affiliation.
