NOTE

For the 20-21 academic year, students are eligible for their tuition scholarship if Flagstaff Mountain is their designated campus. Students that change to the Online campus are not eligible. NAUFlex is part of the Flagstaff Mountain campus.  

Freshman merit-based and non-merit based tuition scholarships at NAU

General criteria

Required of all scholarships unless noted otherwise in individual award elements.

  • Citizenship: Students must meet Arizona Proposition 300 Public Program eligibility requirements.
  • First Degree: May only be used for a student’s first baccalaureate degree.
  • Enrollment: Must be full time at the time of disbursement.
  • Tuition Only: These awards cover tuition only; they do not cover fees or other expenses.
  • Campus: Beginning in spring 2018 students must attend the Flagstaff Mountain campus.
  • Deadline: The offer of admission must be accepted and the enrollment deposit paid by May 1 for the following academic year. If awarded, high school transcripts must be submitted per the instructions provided in the award letter.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Students are automatically considered for these scholarships upon admission. A separate application is not required.
  • Use our Net Price Calculator to determine which tuition scholarships you might be eligible for – results are estimates only.

Renewal Criteria

  • Renewable for four consecutive academic years, applied to the fall and spring semesters only, provided the student meets the renewal criteria each year.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA as noted in individual award elements and on the award letter, and
    • If you previously received the Peak or the Pine Scholarship, you must maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA
    • If you previously receive the Aspen Scholarship, you must maintain a 3.00 cumulative GPA
  • Maintain full-time course enrollment, and
  • Complete enough credit hours each academic year to progress to the next academic level (30 credits to be a sophomore; 60 credits to be a junior; 90 credits to be a senior).
    Note: Repeated courses do not count toward the academic level progression requirement.

Reinstatement

  • If you have circumstances preventing you from meeting any of the renewal criteria, submit a Scholarship Reinstatement Request by the priority date for the applicable semester. Submission of this request does not guarantee award reinstatement.

Education Abroad and Student Exchange

NAU Merit-Based Tuition Scholarships may be applied toward tuition for most education abroad and exchange programs but cannot be used for faculty-led or provider programs. Contact us if you are considering studying abroad or participating in an exchange program.

Arizona Residents

Lumberjack Scholars Award Accordion Closed

Amount: Covers 100 percent of NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus tuition; does not cover fees or other expenses. Additional tuition costs greater than the amount originally awarded that result from excess hours are the student’s responsibility. For example: students who come to NAU with dual enrollment credits may reach the 145 credit limit sooner and must pay the difference in tuition costs.

Selection: Based on the completion and/or in-progress work of the 16 college preparatory (core) courses that are required for admission and a minimum 3.5 unweighted core high school GPA, with no letter grade lower than “B” in any of the required core courses.  Please note:  All 16 core courses must be successfully completed by the date of your high school graduation.

Eligibility: Arizona residents only

Only one course retake for eligibility will be allowed.

Repeated courses that are completed after the date of your high school graduation will not apply.

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of tuition.

President’s Resident Tuition Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $8,000 per academic year beginning 2020-2021

Selection: 3.5-4.0 unweighted core high school GPA.  Beginning 2020-2021 for incoming freshman only, ACT and SAT test scores are not required for initial evaluation.

Eligibility: Arizona residents only

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other outside tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of tuition. It cannot be combined with other merit-based tuition scholarships offered at NAU (the President’s International Baccalaureate scholarship is the only exception).

Dean’s Tuition Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $5,000 per academic year beginning 2020-2021

Selection: 3.0-3.49 unweighted core high school GPA. Beginning 2020-2021 for incoming freshman only, ACT and SAT test scores are not required for initial evaluation.

Eligibility: Arizona residents only

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA.

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other outside tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of tuition. It cannot be combined with other merit-based tuition scholarships offered at NAU (the President’s International Baccalaureate scholarship is the only exception).

Opportunity Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $2,500 per academic year beginning 2020-2021

Selection: 2.90-2.99 unweighted core high school GPA. Beginning 2020-2021 for incoming freshman only, ACT and SAT test scores are not required for initial evaluation.

Eligibility: Arizona residents only

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other outside tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of tuition. It cannot be combined with other merit-based tuition scholarships offered at NAU (the President’s International Baccalaureate scholarship is the only exception).

Coconino First Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amounts: $1,000 per academic year for two years

Selection/Eligibility: Residents of Coconino County attending the Flagstaff campus

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA

This award can be applied towards tuition, on-campus housing, or meal plan charges.

Arizona Academic Decathlon Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $2,000 per academic year

Availability: Up to four consecutive years, fall and spring semesters only, provided the student meets the renewal criteria each year. Number of semesters/years is contingent upon academic level when student transfers to NAU.

How to apply: The Arizona Academic Decathlon Association selects the recipients.

Deadline: Priority is given to students who submit their application by Aug. 1 for fall and Dec. 1 for spring.

Selection: Participation in the Arizona Academic Decathlon–either regional or state–for two or more years is required.

Eligibility: Arizona residents only

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and complete 30 credits every academic year.

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other outside tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of tuition. It cannot be combined with other merit-based tuition scholarships offered at NAU (the President’s International Baccalaureate scholarship is the only exception).


Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

Founders Non-resident Gold Tuition Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $6,000 per academic year beginning 2020-2021

Selection: 3.5-4.0 unweighted core high school GPA. Beginning 2020-2021 for incoming freshman only, ACT and SAT test scores are not required for initial evaluation.

Eligibility: Western Undergraduate Exchange students only

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other outside tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of tuition. It cannot be combined with other merit-based tuition scholarships offered at NAU (the President’s International Baccalaureate scholarship is the only exception).

Founders Non-resident Blue Tuition Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $5,000 per academic year beginning 2020-2021

Selection: 3.0-3.49 unweighted core high school GPA. Beginning 2020-2021 for incoming freshman only, ACT and SAT test scores are not required for initial evaluation.

Out of State (non-WUE)

President’s Excellence Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $11,000 per academic year beginning 2020-2021

Selection: 3.5-4.0 unweighted core high school  GPA. Beginning 2020-2021 for incoming freshman only, ACT and SAT test scores are not required for initial evaluation.

Eligibility: Non-residents only (Non-WUE eligible)

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other outside tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of tuition. It cannot be combined with other merit-based tuition scholarships offered at NAU (the President’s International Baccalaureate scholarship is the only exception).

President’s Non-Resident Tuition Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $9,000 per academic year beginning 2020-2021

Selection: 3.0-3.49 unweighted high school core GPA. Beginning 2020-2021 for incoming freshman only, ACT and SAT test scores are not required for initial evaluation.

Eligibility: Non-residents only (Non-WUE eligible)

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other outside tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of tuition. Other

President’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Scholarship Accordion Closed

Award Amount: $5,000 per academic year

Selection: The IB diploma is awarded to students who earn at least 24 points, subject to certain minimum levels of performance across the whole program and to satisfactory participation in the creativity, action, and service requirements. The maximum a Diploma Program student can earn is 45 points.

Eligibility: Arizona residents and non-residents (including WUE students)

Renewal Criteria: In addition to meeting the general renewal criteria above, maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA.

Multiple scholarship awards: This award can be combined with other tuition scholarships as long as it does not exceed the cost of the out of state portion of tuition.
