Hiring NAU student workers

Resources and support for employers of student workers

NAU student employees are invaluable to the success and daily operations of the university. Departments wishing to hire student employees can register as an employer and post open positions through Handshake.

The two types of student employees

Student employees can be either Federal Work-Study (FWS) or student wage employees.

Federal Work-Study student employees

  • NAU receives funding for these positions through the federal government.
  • You must complete a 30-minute Federal Work-Study Hiring training session. Contact our FWS Coordinator to schedule your training.
  • Once you complete the training, you’ll be able to view students’ FWS eligibility and complete the hiring form. The hiring form process forwards the information to Human Resources/Payroll.
  • The FWS Hiring form must be submitted before each financial aid award period (fall-spring, or summer).

Student wage employees

  • Student wage employees are student employees whose employment would not be eligible for FWS funding. Wages for these student workers generally comes directly from the university.
  • Contact NAU Human Resources to complete the electronic Personnel Action Request and Hire Xpress training to become authorized to hire student employees.
