Capstone refresh process
Who should “refresh” the capstone? Accordion Closed
- All undergraduate degree programs at the Flagstaff Mountain and Extended Campuses need to review and refresh their capstone courses.
- Consider having a group of faculty members who frequently teach the capstone course(s) (or those who will teach the capstone in the future) engage in the refresh of the capstone course(s).
- Since most faculty members are engaged in teaching courses that lead to the culminating experience of the degree program, also consider gathering insights from all faculty about what the capstone should include.
- Consider having a group of faculty or the academic unit leader use the criterion from the Liberal Studies Committee to assess the syllabus prior to its submission to the Liberal Studies Committee
How and when do we submit our “refreshed” capstone syllabus/syllabi? Accordion Closed
- Due date: April 4, 2016
- How do we submit “refreshed” capstone syllabi?
After reviewing and approving revised, agreed-upon refreshed capstones, Department Chairs/directors should fill out and sign the Capstone Refresh Submission Form for each course and e-mail to capstone.refresh@nau.edu
- To develop refreshed syllabi, faculty should use the template provided here: Capstone Syllabus. Individuals should not e-mail refreshed syllabi—they must be submitted by chairs/directors or equivalent using the Capstone Refresh Submission Form

- Download this resource for suggestions on a process that will walk you through the completion of a Capstone Syllabus that includes important characteristics sought by the Liberal Studies Committee.
How will the Liberal Studies Committee review the capstone syllabus? Accordion Closed
- The LSC will ensure that capstones fulfill these fundamental attributes:
- Capstones must be at the 400-level
- Capstones must constitute a minimum of 3 units of credit from “C”-designated courses. An academic unit may design a culminating experience in a single course, or combine types of experiences across multiple courses and requirements. If it makes sense to combine experiences across multiple courses and requirements, it is imperative that the course or courses designated with a “C” for capstone collectively contain at least 3 units of credit.
- The LSC will use the following review criteria (based on syllabus template components) to screen for approvals. Click here for review criteria.
What is the projected timeline for completion of this process? Accordion Closed
The comprehensive review process will take some time. First, syllabi will be reviewed for minimum requirements and programs may be consulted about potential changes. Programs should use revised version of capstone in Fall 2016 even if the LSC review has not concluded.
