Betty Brown has been a member of the Northern Arizona University Health Sciences faculty since 1998. Betty earned her Ph.D. from Arizona State University in Medical Sociology and a M.P.H. in Epidemiology from Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She has additional degrees in Nursing (B.S.N.) and French Literature (M.A. and B.A.). In addition to her academic career, she has public health experience in HIV/STI prevention and care, environmental health investigations of communities adjacent to hazardous waste sites, and nursing in neurological and sexual health.
Research Interest Areas: Betty’s experiences and research interests include public health epidemiology and the assessment of social determinants of health; global health; health disparities and inequities among underserved populations; brain injury and other-abled challenges; mental health and violence prevention; HIV and STI prevention; non-infectious environmental health. She is currently engaged in promoting global learning at NAU (e.g., Mainpat Interdisciplinary Project for Tibetan refugees in India).
Additional Interest Areas: Community-based participatory research; promotion of public health programs in rural community settings.
