Going Global: Meeting New Needs in Ed Leadership
The numbers don’t lie. The American Council on Education’s (ACE) 2012 “Mapping of Internalization on US Campuses,” indicates 47% of US institutions of higher learning reported an increase in funding for international initiatives. The IIE Open Doors Report shows an increase in global student mobility from 2.1 million students in 2001 to 4.5 million in 2014, and the US Department of Commerce estimates that international students have contributed $39 billion to the US economy in 2016, up $4 billion from the previous year.
It’s only logical that such trends are yielding a growing interest in advanced degrees in careers focusing on global learning and international education. In response, the NAU College of Education is collaborating with the NAU Center for International Education (CIE) to establish the International Education Leadership Master of Education program in Spring 2019.
Few graduate programs offer a degree that prepares practitioners, researchers, and leaders in international education, though the market is ripe for a program focusing on just that.
“NAU is responding to a market demanding a program focused on leadership in international education,” said Dean Ramona Mellott. “As one of only six universities offering such a program in the southwest, we are assembling a robust curriculum that will develop some of the best leaders in international education.”
