Study Abroad Q & A with Ana Papen-Gould

I am interested in studying abroad, but where do I start?

Starting the process may seem overwhelming, but the Center for International Education offers a vast array of resources to assist you in getting started. When I was studying abroad, the first step I took was to schedule appointments with various study abroad advisors, each specializing in different countries. This gives you an idea of what is offered in each country and what may be suited to your interests. Another valuable resource is the NAU study abroad program search portal, where all of the programs are listed, with descriptions, duration, and helpful information.

What programs does NAU offer?

NAU offers over 500 programs in 76 different countries, meaning there is diversity in the different programs offered! A complete list of NAU’s study abroad programs is available through the study abroad programs portal, which has search criteria that helps narrow down preferences that students have.

Can I study abroad virtually?

Yes! NAU offers a few different programs that are solely virtual. For example, they offer a program called “Absolute Internships,” where students have the opportunity to participate in a full-time or part-time virtual internship. Additionally, NAU also offers online classes that are taught by professors from universities across the world, such as the University of Tübingen, the University of Tasmania, the University of New South Wales, and many more.

How long is it to study abroad?

There are many study abroad programs, and because of that, there are different durations. However, the NAU study abroad program search website allows students to change and view different program lengths.

When I went abroad, I was able to use a program that lined up with NAU’s spring semester! The Center for International Education advisors will work with you to help you find the best program suited to your duration preferences and needs.

How much does it cost to study abroad?

The cost of studying abroad can be expensive; however, NAU Study Abroad has a page dedicated to different scholarships that you can apply for to help lower the cost of study abroad. Additionally, some of the programs offered even allow students to pay their regular NAU tuition, making study abroad more accessible and affordable. Don’t forget to check out the NAU Study Abroad Scholarships.

What was the greatest challenge while studying abroad?

The biggest challenge that I faced while studying abroad was finding balance between activities/travel and the classes that I was taking. While you are abroad, there are so many different places and activities that you can experience, but you may feel pressured for time. After struggling with finding balance for the first couple of weeks, I spoke directly with my professors abroad and made an academic calendar before I booked any other trips and activities. By doing this, it gave me an idea of when I would be unable to travel due to deadlines, or when I could travel if class was not in session.

Can I study abroad if I don’t speak a foreign language?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that only those who speak a second language are able to succeed while studying abroad. Although it is helpful, it is also a great opportunity to begin a foreign language course while abroad. A few programs encourage students to take a foreign language course and offer starting classes for those who don’t speak the language. It is a fantastic way to learn from native speakers who can guide you through the language directly. By studying the language abroad, it opens new doors for activities, travel, and other opportunities.

What is one thing you would change about your study abroad experience?

One thing that I would change about my study abroad experience is the time I spent in my home country. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel around Europe and other countries, but I had less time than I realized in my home country. If I was going to change anything, I would focus on exploring my host country for a longer period of time.

What advice would you give to those looking to study abroad?

My big word of advice would be…GO FOR IT. Studying abroad was an experience that is unique to every single person and is a great way to move out of your comfort zone. I was able to meet new people and experience new cultures. During my studies, I learned more about Spanish culture and improved my Spanish. I hope that in my future studies, I will be able to continue to travel the world!
