Life in Afghanistan for a teacher and her students

Zahal Turkmani, an undergraduate student in the College of Education, authored an article that was published in the international journal Childhood Explorer. The subject of the article, Life in Afghanistan for a Teacher and Her Students, is Turkmani’s sister.

Turkmani’s publication was originally a submission for her ECI407 Social Studies education course. It was an interview assignment based upon one question: Can you tell me about one historical event that you experienced, witnessed, or lived through?

“When I read Zahal’s interview paper that presented the life of her sister, a teacher in Afghanistan, I wondered if she would be open to my sending her work to a journal,” said NAU faculty member Dr. Barb Veltri.

According to Veltri, Turkmani was contacted within 24 hours of submission.

Zahal Turkmani was born in Afghanistan, raised internationally, and currently resides in metro Phoenix, Arizona. She is a senior at Northern Arizona University majoring in Elementary and Special Education and aspires to a career as a third-grade teacher.
