The CAL Film Series is Back with Journalism in the Movies

Finding free and interesting things to do during college is hard, but the CAL Film Series is here to help every other Tuesday night!

This season, the film series is focusing on journalism in the movies. Each film shows a unique perspective on the power of journalism and the media: some use it to create, while others abuse it to destroy. In one feature, All the President’s Men, audiences follow the journey of the two reporters who broke the news of the Watergate scandal. Releasing this information to the public had an immense impact on American politics. Citizens learned to no longer blindly trust those in power and instead pushed for transparency. On the flip side, in the film Network, a power hungry news anchor proposes the idea of turning televised news into for-profit entertainment. While it is a fictional story, viewers will take away a real world lesson: sometimes news can be twisted to manipulate an audience and garner profit.

No matter which films you watch, we can guarantee you will walk away with a deepened respect for the importance and power of journalism. For details about each film, click here.

We would also like to highlight the pre-release screening of Kiss the Future, written by the NAU professor, Bill Carter. Carter shares his harrowing experience in getting the Irish band, U2, to spread the voices of Bosnian citizens during the 1992 Bosnian War. The media attention this garnered was tremendous, and resulted in U2 playing in concert in Bosnia after the war concluded. “Kiss the Future” demonstrates the importance of community and the impact information can have on the world.
