Interested in a free interactive movie-watching experience or iconic films?

The 2023 College of Arts and Letters Film Series is the perfect event for you.

Every other Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. the Cline Library screens one of the British Film Institute’s decennial list of the Greatest Films of All Time. These films were voted on by over 1,600 qualified individuals, ensuring that each one is a must-watch experience.

NAU professors, Dr. Paul Helford and Dr. Paul Donnelly, host a short discussion before and after the film.

Each film is vastly different.

  • The release dates range from 1952 to 2001.
  • The genres vary from sci-fi, mystery, thriller, and more.

With this much diversity, each night guarantees an entirely unique experience.

What Movies Can I See?

The film series is completely free to anyone. Free weeknight parking for community members is available behind Cline Library (a visitor permit is required-learn more at https://in.nau.edu/university-transit-services/guest-parking/).

The upcoming films are:

October 24, Agnes Varda’s Cléo from 5-7

in a clip froma black and white film, a Blonde woman looks into a window, wearing a 1960's style dress, text on image reads "I always think everyone is looking at me, but I only look at myself."

November 7, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey

Seen from 2001 Space Odyssey showing the astronaut reading a panel about how to use the gravity free toilet

November 21, Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing

three young men stand in summer street, two black and one white, text on screen reads" "You the man, No, you the man"

December 5, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now

Clip showing a mans face, Colonel Corman from Apocalypse Now, looking disgruntled with text that reads "There is a conflict in every human heart between the rational and irrational, between good and evil. Good does not always triumph."

Why Should You Go?

These films provide more than just a couple hours of free entertainment; they give an insight into the world surrounding us. Glimpses into a wide variety of cultures and perspectives will broaden your mind not only intellectually but emotionally as well. The pre and post film discussions will give you a deeper understanding of the cinema that you could not gain by simply streaming the movie online.

Aside from these mental gains from attending the film series, the screenings also give you a chance to connect with your friends and the community around you. Meeting new people and experiencing the emotions of the films grants an excellent escape from day-to-day activities.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2023 CAL Film Series!
