ABOUT WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIES
The Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Program at Northern Arizona University is an academic program focused on and engaged with a critical analysis of social structures, intersectionality, and oppression. We offer a Bachelor’s Degree, a WGS Minor, a Queer Studies Minor, and a Graduate Certificate.
WGS is a program in which you will examine identities, including gender, class, race, sexuality, nationality, citizenship status, and disability. These identities are contextualized within institutional systems and on a global scale. You will learn how these identities and systems were constructed, how they affect people, and how change occurs.
With small classes, dedicated faculty, internship opportunities, and an interdisciplinary class selection, students in the WGS program can expect personal attention and opportunities to incorporate their own topics of interest. Classes often include in-depth discussions, activism projects, art creation, literature, media, practical applications, and societal engagement.
WGS graduates have gone on to use their skills in a variety of areas, including work within non-profit careers, domestic violence shelters, sexual assault prevention education, LGBTQIA centers, indigenous rights organizations, art and media, healthcare, politics, law, business, and more.
Identities and institutions permeate every aspect of society, and knowledge about them will be relevant to any area you go into. A WGS degree can easily be combined with any other degree, fulfilling liberal arts requirements while also attaining a deeper theoretical analysis of society.
