The courses offered in the Justice Studies Minor are designed to provide students from other programs with a general understanding of the criminal justice process so they can understand and evaluate issues facing the criminal justice field. Students pursing a degree in fields such as public administration, political science, sociology, and psychology will find the theoretical and practical courses offered in this minor beneficial to their pursuit of employment in the public sector, particularly areas involving the criminal justice system.
A minor is earned in conjunction with a bachelor’s degree.
To receive a minor (18 – 24 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. At least 12 units of the minor must be unique to that minor and not applied to any other minor.

Students may be able to use some courses to meet more than one requirement. Contact your advisor for details.
No more than fifty percent of the units used to satisfy minor requirements may be used to satisfy major requirements.

Purpose Statement
The minor in Justice Studies supplements a student’s degree plan. It provides students with the skills to analyze the ethical issues impacting the criminal justice field and understand the structure of the criminal justice system. Students can apply these skills to other areas of study such as, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, social work, business, law enforcement, cybersecurity, crime analysis, and pre-law.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, in writing, by identifying scholarly and credible research and using this information to present logical, written arguments in favor of or in opposition to specific policies.
- Thoroughly analyze evidence and research, and logically apply such information when forming arguments and drawing conclusions.
- Demonstrate the ability to interpret applicable theories to address the practical issues.
- Describe the ethical issues impacting the criminal justice or intelligence fields, and offer logical, well-supported solutions for addressing such issues.
