August Blog Post

This month the air is filled with anticipation and anxiety as we ready for both return to campus and the monsoonal rains.  They usually coincide here in the desert southwest.  However, the desert this year is proving to be even more challenging with molds and fungus growing even here in Yuma!  While the monsoons coincide with the return to school, one does not always think about fungus in the desert southwest.  Below is a fungus found locally after the strong storms this month.  Did you know the Academic Library has streaming videos available where you can learn more about the monsoons, deserts, or fungus?  For example, Films On Demand has a 52 minute video entitled super fungi where scientists examine the abilities of how mushrooms digest oil waste to reforest deserts!

Classes begin Monday August 22nd for AWC and August 29th for NAU-Yuma and your Academic Library is ready to welcome you back.  On Tuesday, August 23rd from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, in the Atrium of the LR Building outside the Library, we will be hosting an Open House with all kinds of prizes and an assortment of things for you.  Come by and see all the interesting and unusual things we have available for students and faculty at the Library.  We are here not only to help you with your research but also to help you succeed.  We want to ensure your time spent on campus is rewarding and enriching.  Take time to consider what you want to learn and study.  Ask questions.  There is a lot to explore and we are here to help you.

The library offers study rooms for yourself or for a group which you may reserve in advance.  We also have games, puzzles, Legos, and other distractions to help you relax.  There are videos and music in addition to books, maps, magazines, and journals to help you with your research not to mention all the online materials.

Now let me explain why we do not allow food in the library.  It is because of the bugs which like to eat the books, magazine, maps, and journals.  Because the desert is so dry (most of the time), these bugs will feast on the bindings and glue if they get into the building.  So we try not to attract them by avoiding having food around.  So please, keep your food outside in the Atrium or out of the building.
