On the Log with Angelina Sosa

Born in East Los Angeles, CA, 64 year old Angelina Sosa (Angela) received the Golden Key International Honor Society award. She received this award due to her high grades and academic achievements. She’s currently in her 2nd semester at NAU-Yuma and is majoring in Psychology and minoring in Social Work. When she was given the award, she felt “really good, overwhelmed, and kind of shocked.” It’s a great award to have as a college student.

Throughout her life, Angelina has been dealing with Cerebral Palsy which requires her to use a wheelchair to get where she needs to go. However, that hasn’t stopped her from getting her education and being an example for others during the process. That’s what the award means to her. Her accomplishment is a way to honor her parents. She stated that her parents “motivated me to do more no matter what.” Furthermore, she was always brought up to believe in herself, because her parents and teachers instilled that in her, all her life.

Nonetheless, Angela enjoys being at the NAU–Yuma campus because she feels like she can be herself here. She likes being around people and motivating others by being a positive inspiration to them. Also, she stated that the people at NAU–Yuma treat her with great respect. Nevertheless, she likes to entertain, make others happy, draw & paint, and work with ceramics. She has been involved with art for many years.

Finally, a message that Angelina has for people is: “Don’t let others dictate your life.” Throughout her life, she has had to deal with criticisms. However, she doesn’t listen to what others have to say. She likes to focus on optimism and motivation to continue her goals. One of those goals is to be a role model and spread positivity to other people at NAU–Yuma. She’s proud to be a NAU-Yuma student and we’re proud to have her here as part of our Lumberjack family. Thank you Angelina Sosa for providing your story to us.
