Upward Bound Math & Science

The Upward Bound Math & Science program at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a federally funded college-preparatory program that serves high school students who are low-income, potential first-generation college students. The mission of Upward Bound Math & Science is to assist students with graduating high school, entering college, and earning a baccalaureate degree.
Students served
The UBMS program is housed on the NAU Flagstaff mountain campus serving five target high schools in Northern Arizona. The program works with 9th-12th grade students with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). To eligible for the program, a student must meet the following criteria:
- Be a “potential first-generation college student” (that is, parents do not have a four year college degree) AND/OR
- Classified as low-income (as defined by federal government)
- Be a freshman or sophomore high school student
- Have a 3.0 grade point average (GPA)
- Attending one of the following “target” schools:
- Coconino High School
- Holbrook High School
- Many Farms High School
- Monument Valley High School
- Tuba City High School
Services and resources provided
During the academic year, UBMS makes monthly visits to target schools. During these visits, UBMS provides students with the resources and support they need to successfully navigate high school and thus prepare for their unique post-secondary paths. During the summer, UBMS also offers students an intensive, summer academic program, held on the NAU Flagstaff campus. The Summer Academic Program, called The Academy, is designed to give students the experience of living in a college atmosphere before graduating from high school. UBMS provides instruction in math and laboratory science throughout The Academy. Additional services include:
- Academic year program offers academic instruction, tutoring, academic advisement, preparation in college entrance exams, counseling, social and personal development
- Summer residential program offers a college experience for high school students
- Assistance with college selection, admissions, housing, entrance exams, and financial aid, post-secondary support is also provided
- Instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school
- Cultural, social, and recreational activities designed to foster growth and broaden student awareness, appreciation, and respect for each other
- Student advocacy at various post-secondary institutions, scholarship programs and internships
