Esteemed Graduates,
On this joyous day, as we celebrate your remarkable achievements, we are reminded of the diverse cultural heritage each of you contributes to our vibrant community. We observe this ceremony as a tribute to various identities within the Latin American and Indigenous diaspora, a patchwork of change, resilience, and growth.
Though predominantly reflective of the Southwest region, the stoles adorned today signify all Latin American cultures’ broader pride and accomplishment. We recognize that these symbols might not fully represent each country’s rich diversity and unique heritage. With profound respect, we acknowledge the individual cultural narratives present in our gathering.
As terms like Latine continue to evolve with our identities, we understand that they may not capture the full spectrum of our experiences. Still, today, they unite us in our differences as we honor the cultural wealth and academic journey you all have undertaken.
We pledge, as a community of learners and educators, to continue evolving and to represent the broad range of our collective identities more completely in the celebrations to come. We stand together and are committed to learning from and with you, as your academic ability exemplifies the strength of our communities.
As you wear the stole today, let it symbolize individual accomplishment and the collective spirit and resilience all our communities share. While we recognize it may not encompass every tradition, it is worn as a gesture of solidarity—a celebration of a region and the unity and diversity it represents.
Thank you for enriching our community with your culture, traditions, and voices. May you proudly wear your stole, and may your future shine as brightly as the cultural heritage we honor today.

Event Information
When Cortez arrived on Mexico’s shores in 1519, the Aztecs were already wearing a blanket-type garment, the sarape. The Spanish influenced the weavings by introducing the pedal loom and domesticated sheep and wool. Worn only by men, sarapes were the counterpart of the rebozos and huipiles worn by women. Sarapes were the typical garment of workers, horsemen, and townsfolk alike.
Sarapes were worn over the shoulder by aristocrats, used as a blanket by cowboys, covered walls or beds in homes, or were spread out on the ground at markets to display wares. Sarapes are exquisite works of art, each piece the result of months of work by talented weaving families.
While a recognized symbol of Mexican culture, the convocation committee selected the sarape for the sashes as a tribute to the hard work of our Hispanic students as they reach graduation. The variety of colors across the sashes is intended to honor the rich cultural diversity of our many graduates who proudly represent multiple nationalities in the larger community of NAU.
