Expand the boundaries of knowledge and creativity

Example strategies:

  • Invest in strategic areas of research and creative scholarship to attract and retain talented faculty
  • Create and enhance efficient, state-of-the-art infrastructure, services, and support for research and scholarship
  • Facilitate mentoring and development networks and training opportunities to increase the number of grant applications and awards
  • Cultivate interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, and funding agency collaboration and relationships
  • Coordinate and advance recognition of faculty and staff accomplishments in research and scholarship

Example strategies:

  • Promote undergraduate student participation and recognition in research and creative activities including national research and scholarly competitions
  • Increase and enhance undergraduate mentorships with graduate students and faculty
  • Increase opportunities for undergraduate students to attend and present at professional meetings
  • Foster a culture of innovation and cross disciplinary student collaboration
  • Promote Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs)

Example strategies:

  • Increase nationally competitive and workforce-critical graduate program offerings, especially PhD programs, and the national competitiveness of existing programs
  • Expand the number of graduate teaching and research assistantships
  • Improve salary and benefits for research and teaching assistants to be more competitive in recruiting the best prepared and most diverse graduate students
  • Expand graduate student professional research and development training and opportunities to improve quality of preparation
  • Promote opportunities for graduate students to attend and present at professional meetings

Example strategies:

  • Invest in infrastructure to enhance and increase technology transfer activity
  • Promote the establishment of university spinouts to commercialize discoveries
  • Provide knowledge and expertise to address and inform policy discussions (statewide, national, and international)
  • Identify and participate in economic development opportunities
  • Foster industry, foundation, local/state, and nonprofit research partnerships
  • Support research centers and institutes focusing on regionally-relevant challenges
