The Sociology Department’s Experience of Difference (EoD)

All SOC Majors get to complete 3-credits of applied learning as part of their degree program to prepare them for life after NAU. Explore the different options below.

Internships

Internships can be a great way to gain professional experience and apply what you’ve learned in class. They can also help you stand out in a competitive job market. Students can intern with diverse agencies such as immigrant advocacy (The Literacy Center), domestic violence shelters (Victim Witness), child protective services (CASA), city or county government (including the AZ Legislative Internship), public health outreach (Cancer Support Community Arizona) or higher education (Upward Bound Math & Science Summer Academy).

SUS 450 – Community Engagement internship

A class taught by the internship coordinator who guides learning once you’ve found an internship placement that you like.

SOC 408 –Internship (faculty advisor needed)

*Special permission via Advising for another 408 prefix for double majors (ANT, POS, etc.)

Research

SUS 485 – Community-University Public Inquiry

The program brings together small groups (or “pods”) of undergraduate students who gain research experience and leadership skills while addressing a community partners’ identified research needs.

SOC 485 – Independent Research (faculty advisor needed)

Special Permission via Advising for another 485 prefix for double majors (CCJ, PSY, etc.)

Are you thinking about graduate school? Work on your own research or assist a faculty member with their work to gain hands on experience with research design, data collection, analysis, and reporting. Present your results at the NAU Research Symposium or a regional or national conference and maybe even get a publication.

Study abroad

ANY class you take while studying abroad can count. No need to find an SOC equivalent class, we’ll work with Advising to make sure 3-credits are applied to the EoD.

NAU has over 60 faculty-led study abroad options every year. SOC regularly offers amazing opportunities such as:

NAU in the Alps Sociology of Art and Visual Culture

NAU in Poland Human Reproduction in Society

NAU in Partnership – Care for Nahasdzáán
