RIC Medicare Data Access
The Research Infrastructure Core has purchased the 2016-2018 Medicare data through CHER/SHERC at NAU. We would like to encourage all faculty/researchers at NAU to use this very rich dataset. An investigator at NAU can access the data in two ways:
a. Being added to the current data user agreement (DUA). The current data user agreement outlines a broad research area : Access, Utilization, Quality, and Outcomes in Acute and Post-Acute Care.
If investigators have a research interest that falls under this research area, they can get access to the data by being added to the existing DUA. For information on how to do that, please follow this link: Managing Your Project After Obtaining Data. Additionally, you can reach out to the current Principal Investigator for this project, Dr. Amit Kumar (Amit.Kumar@nau.edu).
b. If an investigator has a research area that is not outlined by the current DUA (separate project, separate aims), it may still be possible for them to use the Medicare data by paying a nominal fee. Researchers will have to submit a reuse request to reuse the data for a separate unique project. Request materials for reuse request can be found here: Request Materials Tool
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) establishes DUAs to be project specific. CMS does permit data reuse for new researcher projects provided they follow the re-use request process and complete a re-use DUA, as well as paying a CMS re-use processing fee. This will depend on the type of requesting organization and files available.
